Online Masterclass In Sharirābhinaya

Sharirābhinaya is the Natyashastric (Marga) method of using the body as a tool of expression. Sharirā is the body and Abhinaya is expression. This path, as given by Shiva and documented in the Natyashastra, is that form of dancing called Marga.

This unique masterclass is open to one and all, no prior dance experience needed.

About the course

A rare opportunity to learn the 2500-year-old tradition of Natyashastra. The aspects of Sharirabhinaya are applicable to every form of Indian dance. The aspects from Natyashastra are taught in an easy to understand the accessible manner in this online, self-paced course.

  1. Learn Shlokas from the Natyashastras and their application.
  2. Learn the various movement exercises (Nritta components) described by Bharata Muni.
  3. Learn the usage of Anga, Upanga and Pratyanga.
  4. Learn Nritta Hastas and Karanas.

Kalamandalam Piyal Bhattacharya

Kalamandalam Piyal Bhattacharya has dedicated himself to reviving Bharata Muni’s tradition of nritta, geeta, abhinaya and has devised a method of Natya training. For over 20 years, he has been diligently researching the core texts of Bharata Muni’s Natya Sashtra along with the study of Abhinava Bharati, which is a commentary on the Natya Sashtra by Acharya Abhinava Gupta. He has been successful in reconstructing and developing a complete system of ancient performances on the proscenium stage of contemporary times. His path-breaking work has won him the prestigious grant for “Safe Guarding the intangible Cultural Heritage of India” in 2014-15.
