Basaveshwara (1131–1196), also known as Basaveshwara, was a 12th-century Kannada poet, philosopher, and social reformer who founded the Lingayat (Virashaiva) tradition. Through his powerful vachanas, he strongly advocated social equality, dignity of labour, and rejection of caste discrimination. He actively promoted inter-caste marriages and championed gender equality by giving women equal spiritual and social status. He established the Anubhava Mantapa as an open forum for spiritual discussion, enriching Kannada literature and fostering an inclusive Bhakti culture.
