Arunagirinathar (14th–15th century), a Tamil Shaiva saint-poet from Tiruvannamalai, revitalised the worship of Lord Muruga through his masterpiece Tiruppugazh. After a dramatic transformation from a life of indulgence, he composed over 1,300 surviving hymns rich in rhythm, philosophy, and devotion. His poetic genius not only revived Muruga bhakti across Tamil Nadu and beyond but also strengthened Tamil cultural and literary identity by blending classical Tamil with deep spiritual and moral values.
