Allama Prabhu, a 12th-century mystic and poet, was a leading figure of the Lingayat (Virashaiva) tradition in Karnataka. As a key exponent of the Vachana movement, he composed profound vachanas (prose-poems) that rejected ritualism, caste hierarchy, and social orthodoxy. Through his revolutionary poetry addressed to “Guheshwara” (Shiva), he promoted spiritual equality, inner realisation, and direct devotion. His works significantly enriched Kannada literature and transformed the cultural and spiritual landscape of medieval Karnataka.
