Srimanta Sankaradeva (1449–1568), the great Assamese saint, poet, playwright, and social reformer, laid the foundation of Assamese classical and folk music through the creation of Borgeets and introduced Ankia Naat (devotional drama) and Sattriya dance. He composed devotional poetry and translated sacred texts into the language of the people. By founding the Ekasarana Dharma (Neo-Vaishnavite movement), he fostered social unity by rejecting caste discrimination and promoting equality, devotion, and community living through Satras and Namghars, profoundly shaping Assamese cultural identity.
