Akkamahadevi (c. 1130–1160), a 12th-century Kannada woman saint and poet, is one of the most revered figures in the Lingayat (Virashaiva) tradition. She composed powerful vachanas (prose-poems) that challenged social norms, gender inequality, and ritualistic practices. Her intense devotion to Lord Shiva (as Chennamallikarjuna) and bold rejection of worldly life reformed both Kannada literature and spirituality. Her writings emphasised personal devotion, equality, and inner purity, making her a pioneering voice in Indian Bhakti and women’s spiritual expression.
