Karaikkal Ammaiyar (6th–7th century), one of the earliest and most revered woman saints of the Tamil Shaiva tradition, is counted among the 63 Nayanars. Originally named Punithavathi, she renounced worldly life and composed powerful devotional hymns in praise of Lord Shiva. Her intense bhakti and fearless poetry, especially Arputha Thiruvanthathi and Thiruvandhadhi, enriched Tamil devotional literature. She is remembered for her profound spiritual dedication and for pioneering the path of passionate devotion through poetry in South Indian culture.
